NIȽ TU,O Hosts Ice Cream Meet and Greets All Summer Long

On July 28th, NIȽ TU,O hosted the first in a series of fun, community-building meet and greets.

NIȽ TU,O’s first Ice Cream Meet and Greet, held at Tsartlip First Nation on July 28th, was the perfect picture of summer fun.

Smiling kids lined up in front of a bright pink ice cream truck, picking out their favorite ice cream or popsicle from a fun selection of shapes and flavors. Neon chalk art peeked out from under their feet, reading, “Free Ice Cream! Welcome! – NIȽ TU,O,” with pink chalk hearts extending out in every direction.

Meanwhile, other participants zipped around on bikes, enjoyed arts and crafts tables, and snacked at the fruit and veggies table between ice cream servings. Older participants dropped their names in a bag to enter a raffle, crossing their fingers that they might win the mini-deep freeze or one of the NIȽ TU,O swag bags that were up for grabs.

This all-ages, summer fun event is just one of several NIȽ TU,O plans to host throughout summer 2023. NIȽ TU,O’s goal is to let the community get to know
NIȽ TU,O’s  Family Support Workers, learn about opportunities to become a caregiver for the community’s youth, and become familiar with the many programs and supports NIȽ TU,O offers.

With a great turn out at the Tsartlip meet and greet, NIȽ TU,O is excited to continue the series of events to nourish deeper connections with the community. According to our new NIȽ TU,O family support worker Fraser, NIȽ TU,O will “be traveling around all 7 nations this summer.”

In addition to providing support for Coast-Salish families affiliated with Beecher Bay/ Scianew, Pauquachin, Tsartlip, Songhees, Tsawout, Tseycum and T’Sou-ke, NIȽ TU,O provides a multitude of support for community members, ranging from programs on healthy relationships and traditional foods to assistance obtaining 1:1 support such as counseling.
